Newport Landing Whale Watching and the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum proudly present:

A Whale of a Day: Whales and Marine Mammals

With the new addition of the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum (NHNM) to the area, Newport Landing and NHNM have joined efforts and created a new educational experience involving whales and marine mammals. The new facility gives us the opportunity to expand our education programming. In conjunction with an on the water experience of whale watching we now offer a pre or post trip extended hands on learning experience through the NHNM.
Your day will include a whale watch field trip with Newport Landing on the open ocean. This enables students to encounter migrating Pacific gray whales, sea lions and several species of dolphin. Your day will also include an innovative classroom-based extension of this experience. This portion of the day invites students to develop exhibits and serve as gallery interpreters. Students will develop and present exhibits in four galleries:
  •  Whale and Marine Mammal Adaptations and Diversity

  •  Origins and Development of Whales

  •  Pacific Whaling History and Traditions

  •  Marine Mammal Protection and Conservation
The tour takes between fourty five minutes to an hour. Your tour guide will take you through each of the four educational stations. They will also be available for questions during each segment. The tour includes underwater footage of whales in their habitat, whale bones, and fossils. On your tour you will also get a chance to handle several marine animals in the touch tank. This hands on experience teamed with an on the water viewing of the California Gray Whale make for a memorable educational experience. To add this tour onto your whale watching trip would be an additional $5.00 per student.
